SUMMARY:Rwanda Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Welcome from Bishop Paul\n\nWhat a joy it is to invite you on a pilgrimage to Rwanda\, January 23 – February 1\, 2025. \nFor years\, Christ Church has developed a beautiful and exceedingly fruitful mission partnership with the Anglican Church of Rwanda\, and recently\, we expanded that partnership into a new phase: pilgrimages\, where our parishioners can experience the faith and life of the Rwandan church. We have funded the building of preschools and churches\, sponsored pastors to be trained at East African Christian College\, and built deep friendships with Archbishop Mbanda\, his wife Chantal\, and so many of his local leaders. \nNow it is time for y’all to come and see\, as pilgrims. \nWe use the “pilgrim” language very intentionally\, as it clarifies our purpose and expectations. Many are familiar with the important work of what we call mission trips\, where the focus is on travelers building something or offering a particular service in the mission field. A pilgrimage has a different focus. We will experience the Rwandan church on mission\, build relationships with Rwandan Anglicans\, celebrate with them the projects we have funded\, come alongside these leaders as learners\, and all the while encounter the Lord in each particular place. \nTo set expectations clearly\, we will not build anything while on pilgrimage. The “work” of the pilgrim is to prayerfully ask the Lord to show us his work and presence in Rwanda. \nLet me share just a few highlights of our journey: \n\nWe will visit several preschools and churches Christ Church has funded\, and meet the children\, teachers\, clergy\, and parishioners.\nWe will worship at Rwandan churches in both English and Kinyarwanda.\nWe will visit the Genocide Memorial.\nWe will build relationships with local leaders\, shop at local markets\, and even take you on a short safari.\n\nI will personally lead the pilgrimage\, leading daily devotions. I can’t wait to introduce you to a country and a people that I deeply love. Surely\, this will be a life-transforming adventure. \nWe recognize that many will want to go\, and space is limited for a trip like this. So\, I am committed to offering this pilgrimage yearly. If you apply but are not invited for this upcoming trip\, you will be considered for future pilgrimages. You will find details about application deadlines\, pre-trip meetings\, funding\, medical requirements\, and travel planning in the application. If you have any questions\, please contact Canon John Battey\, at johnb@christchurchplano.org \nFor those who feel called to apply\, know that I am already praying for you\, that the Lord will prepare you for what he will reveal to you in the land of a thousand hills. \n\n  \n \n\nTrip Details\n\nDeparts from Dallas on Thursday\, January 23\, 2025. Travel overnight and arrive in Kigali\, Rwanda in the evening of January 24. \nActivities in Rwanda from January 24 to January 31. The team participates together in daily activities\, unless medically unable\, and stays each night in a hotel. \n\nMarried team members may stay in the same room.\nOthers will share a room with another team member of the same gender.\n\nDepart from Rwanda on Friday\, January 31\, 2025. Travel overnight and arrive back in Dallas on February 1. \n\nFinancial Requirements\n\nCost. Your travel costs + $2\,200 tax-deductible contribution \n1. You must pay your own travel costs. This includes airfare\, travel to/from Dallas airports\, travel insurance (if desired)\, immunizations\, passport fees\, $50 visa fee when you arrive in Rwanda\, and all personal gifts and souvenirs. \n2. You must contribute $2\,200 to the Christ Church Rwanda Pilgrimage Fund. This fund covers all team-related in-country costs\, including our hotels\, transportation\, meals\, medical and security services through Faith Ventures\, and entry into the Genocide Memorial and Akagera National Park. \n\nYou are welcome to solicit donations from external supporters to help with this cost.\nAll donations to the Christ Church Rwanda Pilgrimage Fund are tax-deductible.\n\n3. Additional fees may be assessed if we are able to visit a Compassion program in Rwanda. More information will be available after team selection. \n \n\nEligibility\n\nDeadline. Interested participants must apply no later than August 31. \nAge. You must be at least 21 years of age by date of departure. \nTravel Requirements. You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date of the trip. You must be immunized for international travel. (It is up to each traveler to decide what immunizations they will receive. Please note that some immunizations need to be received several months in advance of the trip.) \nPhysical Requirements. You must get a medical release before participating in the trip\, indicating that you can… \n\nwalk unaided at least one mile over uneven and steep terrain\,\nsit for 4-5 hours at a time\,\nmanage your own luggage\, including lifting luggage into an overhead compartment on the plane.\n\nYou will also sign a liability form releasing Christ Church Plano from responsibility in case of illness or accident or other untoward event while traveling. \nEmotional Requirements. You may encounter emotionally difficult situations and themes\, such as poverty and genocide. You should be emotionally strong enough to manage these conditions. \nDietary Requirements. Dietary restrictions will not be accommodated in Africa. Anyone who cannot participate in normal unrestricted meals should not apply. \n\nTimeline of Selection and Preparation\n\nNotification. The leadership of Christ Church will review all applications. Selected participants will be notified by the end of September. We anticipate that more people will be interested in attending than spots are available; therefore\, some applicants will not be chosen for this trip but will be considered for future trips. \nPre-trip Meetings. Christ Church will host 4 or 5 pre-trip meetings between October and January. Team members must attend all pre-trip meetings or make an effort to obtain information covered in the event they cannot attend. \nReading and Worship. SUMMARY:The Colson Fellows: Informational Meeting
DESCRIPTION:For many\, our study of the Bible focuses solely on understanding God and learning how to live in right relationship to Him\, ourselves\, and each other. Yet the Bible also teaches us to live in right relationship to every aspect of creation\, which includes society\, culture\, art\, economics\, education\, and politics. Christ leads his disciples to join him in his work of restoring all things\, and we do so by discovering how to properly order (and re-order) our fallen world. \nIdeas have consequences: for good and for ill. Ours is a world where “powers and principalities” are actively working to dis-order God’s good creation in areas such as marriage\, family\, human sexuality\, and personhood\, to name a few. To truly love our neighbors\, we must gain proficiency with ideas\, show understanding and compassion to those who have become victims of ideas\, and share the gospel of Christ’s love\, freedom\, and peace. \nTo this end\, Christ Church is pleased to partner with the Colson Fellows\, a program of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview. The Colson Fellows program is a rigorous educational course that compresses years of Christian study into ten months. It lays a solid foundation for those new to the study of Christian worldview\, and for those already well-versed in Christian apologetics\, it provides fresh insights into today’s rapidly changing culture. \nProgram participants go beyond understanding worldview as mere arguments and facts. We help to develop critical thinking skills and the wisdom to discern what is true\, good\, and beautiful in every issue that arises today\, so that together with Christ\, we can understand the times\, speak thoughtfully\, and grow in grace. \n \n\nThe Colson Fellows program runs from July 2024 – May 2025. \nParticipants follow a carefully curated curriculum that helps them understand and identify worldviews and how they manifest in today’s ideas\, philosophies\, policies\, and practice. You will learn how to analyze and understand culture and its influence. Additionally\, we will examine current cultural flashpoints such as race relations\, progressive sexuality\, religious liberty\, the role of government\, economics\, and sanctity of life. Finally\, participants will examine the concept of calling and develop a Personal Ministry Plan that will help them discover their calling\, identify their unique gifts and sphere of influence. \nProgram features include… \n\n24/7/365 access to the Colson Fellows online learning platform;\nMonthly meetings facilitated by Alex Vargas\, a commissioned Colson Fellow;\nTwice-monthly video webinars in which you will interact with authors from the reading list and other leading worldview scholars;\nInteractive daily devotionals that weave together all course components;\nAssistance developing a teaching practicum in which you will teach on a topic you’ve learned;\nStrengthsFinder assessment;\nLifetime access to Colson Center resources and ongoing worldview education;\nInclusion into a network of over 3\,500 Colson Fellows working across the globe in various spheres of Christian ministry.\n\n\n \n\nTuition: Typically\, participants in the Colson Fellows program pay $900. Through an exclusive licensing agreement with the Colson Center\, Christ Church Plano members only pay $700 in tuition. \nOnline Access: The Colson Fellows program uses an online classroom called Pathwright. To participate\, you must have access to a computer and be proficient with computer-based programs to access assignments. \nIn-person Meetings: The Colson Fellows program meets from July to April at Christ Church for monthly meetings\, for a total of 10 meetings. To be commissioned in May\, you must have no more than two unexcused absences. \nTime Commitment: The Colson Fellows program is a rewarding but rigorous program that requires between 6-8 hours per week. Participation includes a daily devotional exercise and twice monthly online webinars. \nBooks: In addition to the $700 program fee\, participants will need to purchase books on the reading list\, which are available in the Christ Church Bookstore or the retailer of your choice. The estimated cost of books is $200. \n\n \n\n\nApril 2024: Registration opens for the Colson Fellows program. Submit your registration here.\nMay 12 and 19: Information table in the Fellowship Hall is available with curricular samples.\nMay 26: Christ Church hosts an open informational meeting with the Dean of the Colson Fellows program.\nJuly 1: Registration closes\, and online access begins for course participants.\nJuly 13: First monthly meeting at Christ Church. Participants will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon on the 2nd Saturday of each month through April 2025. Breakfast\, coffee\, and refreshments are provided.\nAugust 15: Tuition payment is due in full.\nMay 2025: Participants who complete the program are commissioned.

SUMMARY:Reading with the Saints
DESCRIPTION:“None of us can fully escape the blindness of our age\, but we shall certainly increase it\, and weaken our guard against it\, if we read only modern books. Where they are true they will give us truths which we half knew already. Where they are false they will aggravate the error with which we are already dangerously ill. The only palliative is to keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds\, and this can be done only by reading old books.” —C.S. Lewis \nAs Christians\, we have great reason to devote ourselves to the great books of the past. For in the great works of Christian history\, we find not only a corrective to our own errors\, but also a rich source of wisdom from those whose minds have been sanctified and transformed by the Holy Spirit. Reading old books is helpful. Reading the great books of the Christian tradition is vital. \nReading with the Saints is an opportunity to read some of the greatest and most influential books in Christian history\, one selection per month\, then discuss the profound and enduring questions posed by each text. What is the gospel? Who is Jesus Christ? What does it mean to follow him? How should the church relate to surrounding cultures? And what is distinctive about the Christian way of life? \n\nRegister below to join the group. Meetings are on Mondays monthly\, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and will include time for teaching\, discussion\, and prayer.\nParticipants are asked\, if at all possible\, to read the assigned text prior to the meeting. PDF copies are available for download on this page and\, alternatively\, can be purchased from the Bookstore.\nChildcare is available by reservation.
